The Committee was set up after the Kwazulu-Natal province’s Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made serious allegations implicating politicians, the judiciary and law enforcement officers in criminal activity in a media briefing in July six last year. Khumalo’s testimony follows that of former acting National Police Commissioner, Khomotso Phahlane yesterday who told the Committee that political interference in the SA Police Service has been prevalent for a long time.
Khumalo, who is also the Project Manager for the Political Killings Task Team, told the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry last year that there is a criminal cartel known as the ‘Big-five’ operating in SA. He said the cartel was responsible for Murders, drug-trafficking, kidnappings and other organised crimes. He named attempted murder accused, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and murder-accused Katiso “KT” Molefe as some of the members of the cartel. He was arrested with other police officers in June last year in connection with an unlawful appointment in Crime Intelligence.
