Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan pulled off another upset at the ASB Classic in Auckland, beating second seed Casper Ruud in straight sets
Marozsan, who eliminated defending champion Gael Monfils in the opening round, sealed a 6-4, 6-4 victory with a single break of serve in each set. It marks his 10th career win over a Top 20 opponent and sends the 26-year-old into the quarter-finals, where he will face American qualifier Eliot Spizzirri for a place in the last four. In the meantime, Australian amateur Jordan Smith stunned a star-studded field to win the Australian Open 1 Point Slam in Melbourne. Smith defeated women’s world Number 117 Joanna Garland in the final to claim the $1-million prize.
The New South Wales state champion knocked out world Number 2 and defending Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner en route, while Garland eliminated Alexander Zverev. The exhibition event featured amateurs, celebrities and top pros in a one-point-and-done format, delivering one of the shocks of the week.
