The US has announced the launch of Trump’s Gaza peace plan with the formation of a committee of Palestinian technocrats that will temporarily run Gaza
The non-political committee will take over Gaza’s day to day affairs from Hamas
It is made up of 15 experts and will be led by a former Deputy Transportation Minister with the Palestinian Authority
With the establishment of the committee, US Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff said the peace process is “moving from ceasefire to demilitarization, technocratic governance, and reconstruction”.
However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested the announcement was largely symbolic, calling it a “declarative move” and insisting that the body of the last hostage remaining in Gaza must be returned.
Major challenges remain in phase two including the disarming of Hamas, the deployment of an international force and further Israeli withdrawals from Gaza.
