Cases of violence against people with albinism have resurfaced in parts of Malawi

Cases of violence against people with albinism have resurfaced in parts of Malawi, raising renewed concern among advocacy groups and human rights defenders.

Young Muhamba, a leader of the Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi, has condemned the attacks and said the organisation plans to formally raise the matter with President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika. He said urgent action is needed to protect people with albinism, who continue to face threats, discrimination and violence linked to harmful beliefs and practices.

Muhamba warned that the re-emergence of such incidents has created fear within affected communities and undermines efforts to promote inclusion and safety. He called on authorities to strengthen law enforcement, ensure perpetrators are brought to justice and intensify public awareness campaigns.

Jayne Chilimampunga reports that advocacy groups are urging the government to treat the situation as a national priority, stressing that sustained political commitment is essential to end attacks against people with albinism in Malawi.
