Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is stepping up diplomatic efforts as it prepares for a potential national dialogue, with President Félix Tshisekedi engaging regional leaders in recent days.
Tshisekedi travelled to Luanda twice, on January 4 and 8, to meet Angolan President João Lourenço, before visiting Lomé on January 12 for talks with Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé. Gnassingbé has been appointed by the African Union as mediator in the ongoing tensions between the DRC and Rwanda, placing him at the heart of the region’s diplomatic efforts.
At the centre of these consultations is the plan to launch an inclusive political dialogue, with Lourenço expected to facilitate the process. Several DRC delegations are scheduled to meet the Angolan leader in the coming days, a move seen as a crucial step in advancing the dialogue.
Speaking on the matter, Emery Damien Kalwira, President of the Popular Coalition, said; “This is a critical moment for our country. A well-facilitated dialogue could pave the way for lasting political stability, but it requires genuine engagement from all parties involved.”
Kalwira added that the regional involvement of Angola and Togo could help build confidence among stakeholders and provide a framework for constructive discussions.
