Slum Dwellers International (SDI), a global movement representing informal settlement communities in over 30 countries, has criticised the ongoing forced evictions and demolitions in Makoko and other waterfront areas in Lagos, Nigeria.
According to the organisation, the demolitions, which were still underway as of January 14, have displaced thousands of residents without adequate notice, compensation, or alternative housing, placing already vulnerable communities at heightened risk.
Esther Bimbo Osobe, representing the SDI Federation in Nigeria, said; “These evictions are a direct threat to the lives and livelihoods of the people who call these communities home. We are urging the authorities to halt the demolitions and engage with residents to find fair and humane solutions.”
SDI warns that the continued displacement could exacerbate poverty and social instability and called on the Nigerian government to uphold international standards on the rights of people living in informal settlements.
