South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa is hosting Madagascar’s new leader, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, in Pretoria.

Randrianirina took over following the removal of former President Andry Rajoelina last year, which plunged the island nation into political uncertainty.

SA has voiced concern over Madagascar’s recent developments, urging calm and a respect for democratic processes. Pretoria stressed its support for a peaceful resolution, the protection of democracy, the rule of law, and sustainable development in Antananarivo.

The Southern African Development Community ntervened after the political instability, highlighting the regional bloc’s ongoing role in safeguarding stability among member states.

SA and Madagascar have maintained diplomatic relations since 1994. Over the years, the two countries have signed agreements covering air transport, merchant shipping, and science and technology, demonstrating a commitment to long-term cooperation beyond political matters.
