South Africa’s (SA) former Diplomat, Dr Kingsley Makhubela has criticised recent statements by the Presidency and the Department of Defence regarding Iran.

Makhubela warned that Pretoria’s position raises serious questions about the country’s foreign policy independence.

The Presidency said it was following developments in Iran with concern after Tehran vowed to retaliate should the United States (US) and Israel launch military action. Iran has faced intensified international scrutiny over its response to ongoing civil protests.

Defence Minister Angie Motshekga this week announced an inquiry into Iran’s participation in the Brazil, Russia, India, China and SA Plus naval exercises taking place in Simon’s Town in the Western Cape. The decision followed reported unease from some Western governments about Tehran’s inclusion in the drills.

Doctor Makhubela said the timing and tone of the government’s statements suggested external pressure. He questioned why authorities had not raised objections earlier and whether SA was now being pushed to reconsider its position.

He asked if there had been threats by other participating countries to withdraw from the exercise should Iran remain involved. He also questioned whether the Chief of Defence was being turned into a scapegoat to manage diplomatic fallout.

Makhubela warned that any perception that SA was bowing to European or US pressure could undermine its credibility within BRICS Plus and the broader Global South.
