The fatal head-on collision occurred just before 8:00 Central African time on Monday in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng Province as learners were on their way to school.
It involved a minibus taxi transporting pupils and a side tipper truck.
Gauteng Education Department Spokesperson, Steve Mabona, says eleven of the pupils have been positively identified, while one victim is yet to be identified, as families continue with the emotional process of identification.
Police have opened a case of culpable homicide, with both drivers under investigation, while forensic and mechanical assessments of the vehicles involved continue.
