UNMISS has expressed deep concern over reports of serious military clashes in Jonglei and Eastern Equatoria states

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has expressed deep concern over reports of serious military clashes in Jonglei and Eastern Equatoria states.

According to the UN, the fighting involves forces aligned with the main parties to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, raising fears of a further deterioration in security in already volatile areas.

Speaking in New York, the UN Secretary-General’s Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, said the reported clashes threaten both civilian safety and ongoing efforts to stabilise the country.

UNMISS has urged all parties to exercise restraint and recommit to the peace process, warning that continued violence risks undermining hard-won gains made since the signing of the agreement.

South Sudan has struggled to fully implement the peace deal, with sporadic violence continuing in several regions despite repeated calls for calm from the international community.
