According to political analyst Dr David Matsanga, the return of former junta leader Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba from Togo is a strong signal that efforts to destabilise Burkina Faso will face consequences.
Damiba, who was removed from power in a 2022 coup, is set to stand trial in Burkina Faso over allegations of planning actions that threatened national stability. Matsanga said the extradition reflects a positive move towards regional co-operation and reinforces the rule of law.
He added that Damiba faces serious charges under military law, which carry potentially severe penalties, and that the upcoming trial will be closely watched as a test of Burkina Faso’s ability to hold former military leaders accountable.
