Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has issued an urgent appeal for support as severe flooding continues

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has issued an urgent appeal for support as severe flooding continues to displace communities and strain the country’s emergency response, particularly in the central and southern regions.

Weeks of heavy rainfall have left more than 680 000 people affected, with hundreds of fatalities reported and thousands of homes destroyed. Key infrastructure, including transport links and public facilities, has been badly damaged, hampering access to some of the hardest-hit areas.

In a national address, Chapo called for unity and collective action, urging government departments, businesses, civil society organisations and international partners to step in and assist those affected. He stressed that additional resources are needed to provide shelter, food, healthcare, and clean water, warning that further rainfall could worsen conditions.

The government says it is working closely with local authorities and the private sector to coordinate relief efforts and reach vulnerable communities. Emergency teams are focusing on rescue operations and the delivery of basic services, but officials acknowledge that the scale of the disaster has made the response increasingly complex.

Governance expert Hélio Guiliche said the floods show Mozambique’s vulnerability to extreme weather events and the growing humanitarian risks linked to climate change. While immediate relief is critical, he noted that long-term investment in disaster preparedness and resilient infrastructure will be essential.
