Zimbabwean opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has announced his return to active politics, nearly two years after stepping down from his party.

Speaking to journalists in Harare, Chamisa said his immediate focus would be on uniting and revitalising Zimbabwe’s fragmented opposition movement.

He said the next six months would be critical in rebuilding trust among opposition supporters and creating a cohesive political front capable of challenging the ruling party.

Chamisa, a former leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change, stepped away from party politics in 2023 amid internal disputes and leadership tensions that weakened the opposition ahead of national elections.

Since then, Zimbabwe’s opposition landscape has remained divided, with analysts warning that fragmentation has eroded its ability to mount an effective challenge to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government.

Chamisa said his return was driven by ongoing public concerns over economic hardship, governance and democratic reforms.

He stopped short of announcing the formation of a new political party but indicated that discussions were underway with various opposition figures and civic groups.
