Sudan’s military-led authorities have approved an emergency budget for 2026

Sudan’s military-led authorities have approved an emergency budget for 2026, nearly three years after the country descended into war.

The decision was taken by the Sovereign Council and the cabinet during a meeting held in the capital, Khartoum, marking the first time the bodies have convened there since fighting erupted in April 2023.

Officials say the emergency budget is aimed at sustaining basic state functions amid ongoing conflict, economic collapse, and a deepening humanitarian crisis.

Since the outbreak of war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, Sudan’s economy has been severely disrupted, with widespread damage to infrastructure, mass displacement and sharp shortages of food, fuel and essential services.

While authorities have not released full details of the budget, analysts expect it to prioritise security spending, public sector salaries and limited social services.

The move comes as international efforts to broker a ceasefire continue, with humanitarian agencies warning that millions of Sudanese remain at risk due to prolonged fighting and restricted access to aid.
