South African Political Analyst Mighty Jamie has raised concerns over a recent cabinet reshuffle in Ivory Coast, describing it as a “consolidation of power” that signals the growing influence of a political dynasty.
Speaking on Rise and Shine, Jamie highlighted the appointment of President Alassane Ouattara’s brother, Tene Birahima Ouattara, as Deputy Prime Minister while he continues to hold the defence portfolio.
“This move is more than just a reshuffle, it’s a clear effort to control key levers of power and oversight, particularly the military,” Jamie said, warning that such arrangements risk undermining democratic governance and institutional accountability.
Most Ministers retained their posts following the December elections, in which Ouattara’s party won a strong parliamentary majority. Jamie noted that while continuity might appear stabilising, concentrating defence and executive authority within the President’s family raises questions about checks and balances and the long-term trajectory of Ivorian democracy.
