The United Nations (UN) Secretary General has warned that the world’s systems of global problem solving were facing a reckoning with structures and institutions remaining tethered to another time.
Antonio Guterres was addressing the media in New York, United States on his priorities for 2026, which will also be his final year leading the UN, while warning that global problems would not be solved by one power calling the shots.
“Our structures and institutions must reflect the complexity and the opportunity of these new times and realities. Global problems will not be solved by one power calling the shots.”
He has 11 months left in office as he reflected on how 2026, was already shaping up to be a year of constant surprises and chaos with geopolitical divisions multiplied and magnified by an epidemic of impunity.
Guterres also pointed to a world that was witnessing the greatest transfer of power, not from governments to people but from governments to private technology companies, a power dynamic rooted in a rush for data.
