Zuma’s arm deal case

Two key court rulings are expected today in South Africa’s (SA) Pietermaritzburg High Court in KwaZulu-Natal.

The long running arms deal corruption case involving former SA President Jacob Zuma and French arms company Thales.

Legal analyst Mpumelelo Zikalala says the court is expected to rule on Zuma and Thales’ application for leave to appeal an earlier decision by Judge Nkosinathi Chili, who dismissed their bid for acquittal.

The court will also decide whether the criminal trial can proceed while that appeal process is still underway a ruling that could determine whether the matter moves forward after years of delays.

Zuma and Thales are facing charges of racketeering, corruption, fraud and money laundering linked to the controversial multi billion rand arms procurement deal of the late 1990s.
