South Africa’s (SA) Eastern Cape Province has been hit with another Foot-and-Mouth disease outbreak in the Humansdorp area under the Kouga Municipality.
The outbreak has affected a farming community in Kruisfontein, impacting their beef business.
Over 30 cattle are showing strong symptoms of Foot-and-Mouth disease and have been put under quarantine.
The outbreak follows a case that was also reported at Amahlathi Local municipality in December.
The Kruisfontein farming community has over 120 cattle in their farm.
The cattle that have not yet shown signs of the disease are at high risk.
The farmers are closely monitoring the cattle, with some getting sick and adding to the tally of infected animals, with the number growing, the business is impacted
The Kouga Municipality has implemented strict control of roaming animals, with law enforcement engaging communal farmers and monitoring hotspot areas.
Farmers have also been advised to move any animals showing signs of the disease to the designated quarantine camp.
