HPCSA has issued a strong warning against unregistered environmental health practitioners

Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) has issued a strong warning about the rise of individuals claiming to be qualified Environmental Health Practitioners without proper registration.

The Professional Board for Environmental Health Practitioners, part of the HPCSA, said practising any health profession without registration is illegal under the Health Professions Act No. 56 of 1974. Section 34 of the Act makes registration with the relevant professional board a legal requirement, and anyone who ignores this faces prosecution and possible penalties.

“Operating without registration is not only against the law but also puts the public’s health and safety at serious risk,” the HPCSA said. Through its Inspectorate Office, the Council continues to investigate and arrest individuals found practising illegally.

Environmental Health Practitioners are responsible for protecting public health in areas including water and waste management, food and transport safety, pest control, pollution control, and broader environmental monitoring.
