Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema has entered a lively cultural debate that unfolded online after Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama arrived in the country wearing a traditional garment known as a fugu.

Some social media users in Zambia mockingly referred to the outfit as a “blouse”, prompting discussion about traditional dress and cultural identity across the continent.

Hichilema responded light-heartedly, expressing admiration for the design and saying he would be “ordering more of that stuff” for himself.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister later weighed in, describing the online buzz as a positive sign that young Africans are increasingly interested in reclaiming and celebrating their cultural heritage.

In Ghana, efforts to promote traditional dress have already taken root through initiatives such as “Fugu Friday”, where people are encouraged to wear African attire at the end of the working week.
