Global food prices have fallen for the fifth month in a row, driven by record harvests and rising stockpiles.
Food and Agricultural Organisation’s Price Index team Monika Tóthová says: “We are talking about food commodities that are being imported when a country is not growing enough of those foods. All these commodity levels, we are talking about are declining in prices.”
This easing is helping to stabilise international markets, but many African countries continue to struggle with high food costs, partly due to import dependencies and local supply challenges.
Rising rice and vegetable oil prices also highlight that not all staples are becoming cheaper.
