Cyclone Gezani, which made landfall over eastern Madagascar on Tuesday with winds reaching 250 kilometres per hour, is expected to enter the Mozambique Channel late this Wednesday. According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), the system may weaken while crossing Madagascar but could strengthen again once over the Channel.

The storm, the seventh named system of the 2025/26 south-west Indian Ocean cyclone season, hit Madagascar’s second-largest city, causing severe wind and rain damage. Authorities on the island have issued warnings as the cyclone continues its destructive path.

SAWS has noted that SA faces no immediate threat, but maritime operators in the south-west Indian Ocean and the Mozambique Channel are advised to exercise caution due to rough seas, strong winds, and hazardous conditions.
