South Africa’s (SA) beef exports fell by 26% in 2025, even as global demand for red meat continued to rise.
The decline has been linked to China’s ban on SA beef, introduced after the country experienced its worst outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in recent memory. Since early 2025, the disease has affected seven of SA’s nine provinces, disrupting production and trade.
Industry experts warn that unless the outbreak is brought under control, SA’s red meat sector could continue to face challenges in both domestic and international markets.
