The organisation warned that thousands of minors in the conflict‑torn east remain trapped in brutal conditions.
According to DRC government figures, more than 13 000 children were recruited into armed groups in Ituri province in 2025 alone. Slightly more than 1 300 have since been released, but the majority are still being held by militias operating in one of the country’s most mineral‑rich yet volatile regions.
Authorities say some children join these groups voluntarily after witnessing the killing of their parents during attacks by rival militias. Others are abducted, drugged or coerced into becoming fighters, porters or spies. Many of the released children have described harrowing experiences of forced violence, abuse and exploitation.
Save the Children said the situation constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law and the rights of the child. It called for the unconditional release of all children still held by armed actors and urged authorities to strengthen protection measures to prevent further recruitment.
