Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced that Italy is giving African countries the option to suspend debt repayments during extreme climate events.
Meloni made the remarks at the second Italy‑Africa summit, which ran alongside the 39th African Union Summit, the continent’s highest decision‑making forum, held this week in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The initiative is aimed at easing financial pressures on African nations facing increasingly frequent climate-related disasters, including floods, droughts and storms, which have strained public resources and development budgets.
