South Africa’s (SA) Electoral Commission’s (IEC) annual Tertiary Institutions Campaign has kicked off in earnest at Taletso Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Zeerust, in the North West Province.
Speaking to SABC, the Commission’s Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo, said statistics show that their youth voter registration is currently standing at 48.6% in the 20 to 29 years category, adding that ideally, they should be doing far better.
Mamabolo says the campaign is aimed at getting students at tertiary institutions to start having a conversation about politics, democracy and the constitution.
The initiative at Taletso TVET College is led by IEC Chairperson Mosotho Moepya, Higher Education Department’s Deputy Director-General, Sam Zungu, and the college’s Principal, Moeti Nkomo.
