A four-day political dialogue involving representatives of both the ruling majority and opposition parties has begun in Djambala, central Congo-Brazzaville, as the country prepares for the presidential election on March 15.

The forum, running until February 19, is intended to create conditions conducive to a credible vote. Incumbent President Denis Sassou-Nguesso, who has held power for more than 41 years cumulatively, is seeking another five-year term.

The timing of the dialogue, just four days after the close of candidate registration, has sparked debate and concern among political observers and the public.

Clément Mierassa, President of the Congolese Social Democratic Party, said the dialogue could play a crucial role if it is conducted transparently.

“This forum provides an opportunity for genuine discussion between the majority and opposition, but its success will depend on ensuring all voices are heard and that agreements respect democratic principles,” Mierassa said.
