Authorities in Kano State, northern Nigeria, have arrested nine Muslims for eating food during the first day of this year’s Ramadan fast.
Kano, which has a predominantly Muslim population, operates an Islamic legal system (Sharia) alongside secular law. Under Sharia, practising Muslims are prohibited from eating or drinking between sunrise and sunset during the holy month of Ramadan.
The arrests were reportedly carried out by the state’s Islamic police, who enforce adherence to religious regulations. No further details have been provided regarding the detainees or potential penalties.
