According to South Africa’s (SA) Casual Workers’ Advice Office (CWAO), labour-related strike action surged in 2025, with 117 strikes recorded nationwide, up from 87 in 2024.
The majority of these, 79, occurred in the public sector, primarily among municipal workers, the CWAO’s Sydney Moshoaliba said.
Moshoaliba attributed the spike in strikes to the government’s insistence that municipalities generate their own revenue, noting that “many municipalities are collapsing because they can’t run their affairs in terms of revenue,” leading to widespread “wildcat” strikes.
