The first group of 150 Sudanese refugees who opted to return home from Uganda has arrived in Port Sudan, marking the start of what organisers describe as a voluntary repatriation process. The returnees said they could no longer remain in exile as the conflict drags on.
Member of the High Committee of Voluntary Return, Mohammad Hussein Adam, stressed that the programme is strictly voluntary and intended only for refugees who choose to return based on their personal circumstances.
Adam said improved security conditions in parts of Sudan made the return possible. The group flew into Port Sudan and will be transported by bus to Khartoum and other states where stability has relatively improved. He added that arrangements were put in place to ensure the returnees reach their destinations safely.
