South Africa’s (SA) National Department of Health says global funding cuts and rising health system pressures will be central to discussions at a high-level meeting of Health Ministers from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Johannesburg.
The two-day meeting will bring together Ministers responsible for HIV and AIDS, alongside broader public health officials, to address regional health challenges including mpox, cholera, malaria, tuberculosis and HIV.
Dr Moeketsi Modisenyane, Director for Africa and Middle East Relations at SA’s National Department of Health, said declining international development assistance has placed pressure on health systems across the region. He said Ministers will focus on strengthening domestic health financing models following cuts in aid to several countries.
The meeting will also see the launch of a SADC scorecard on sexual and reproductive health and rights, aimed at improving accountability and measuring progress across member States.
