Ghana President John Dramani Mahama is leading a push for global reparations

Ghana President John Dramani Mahama is leading a push for global reparations over the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade, which forcibly displaced millions of Africans to the Americas and Europe.

The initiative, supported by the African Union, calls on the United Nations General Assembly to formally recognise the slave trade as a crime against humanity. Ghana has also been urged to advocate for the repatriation of African foreign reserves currently held in Western financial institutions.

The campaign forms part of broader continental efforts to seek historical justice, economic redress, and stronger global recognition of Africa’s historical experiences under slavery and colonial exploitation.
