SA five miners trapped 890 metres underground
One week after a catastrophic mud rush flooded South Africa’s (SA) Ekapa Minerals’ former De Beers diamond mine in the Northern Cape Province, rescue teams are continuing efforts to reach five miners trapped 890 metres underground.
Large volumes of water have been pumped out as part of the operation.
Four specialised teams from various mines across the province have joined efforts to assist Ekapa Minerals.
Despite continuous pumping, water levels have remained unstable and continues to rise.
National Union of Metalworkers of SA organiser in Kimberley, Lerato Motlagane says their main concern is the lack of direct engagement from Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe and Northern Cape Premier Dr Zamani Saul.
