South Africa’s (SA) 20-year-old cricketer Kayla Reyneke has described the excitement of being called up to the Proteas Women for the first time.

The former Under-19 captain will join the national squad for three Twenty20 International matches against Pakistan, with the first game scheduled for Tuesday in Potchefstroom, SA.

Reyneke recalled receiving the call from national coach Mandla Mashimbyi while waking from a nap.

“I got a call from coach Mandla as I was waking up from a nap. I’m very excited for this opportunity to play alongside my role models and to take the field with them. Growing up, these were the players I looked up to while watching the game. It’s a huge honour to wear this badge,” she said.

The young all-rounder hopes to make an immediate impact as SA gears up for the International Cricket Council Women’s World Cup in England this June.
