Burundi has assumed the Chairship of the African Union (AU) at a time of heightened regional security and diplomatic challenges, particularly as fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo continues to destabilise parts of the Great Lakes region.
Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye said the country would use its rotational leadership role to promote neutrality and strengthen Africa’s diplomatic voice on the global stage. The leadership transition was formalised during the recent AU summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Regional affairs analyst Dennis Beru said Burundi’s Chairship represents an opportunity to strengthen continental diplomacy despite ongoing regional tensions. “This is a chance for Burundi to demonstrate leadership in promoting dialogue, peace and co-operation across Africa,” he said.
