The United Sates (US) aims to process some 4 500 refugee applications from white South Africans (SA) per month. That’s according to an exclusive report from the Reuters News Agency.
The new numbers, contained in an unreported State Department document appear to invalidate an earlier cap that the White House had announced of 7 500 refugees allowed in to the US per annum.
The report says the US embassy in Pretoria is putting measures in place to support the effort.
The report says that the US Embassy in Pretoria was planning to create a modular village for refugee processing on its grounds and that the new target of 4 500 signalled a push to ramp up efforts to admit more people from SA.
Only around 2 000 white South Africans have been admitted since the process began last May although the pace is said to have picked up this year.
The report quotes from the State Department document that the inability to safely process about 4 500 applicants per month, an objective communicated by the White House, would result in failure to meet a Presidential priority. South Africa has long maintained that any suggestion that Afrikaners faced persecution in the country was unsubstantiated.
