More than 4 000 Burundian refugees have returned to Burundi from neighbouring Tanzania in the latest phase of voluntary repatriation organised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The returnees had been living in refugee camps in western Tanzania after fleeing political instability and insecurity in Burundi in previous years. UNHCR said the operation was conducted in co-ordination with the governments of both countries to ensure that the returns were voluntary, safe and dignified.
Officials say the repatriation forms part of ongoing efforts to support durable solutions for displaced Burundians, many of whom have spent years in exile. Reception arrangements have been put in place to assist returnees with documentation, basic supplies and reintegration support upon arrival.
Despite the returns, thousands of Burundian refugees remain in camps across Tanzania and other neighbouring states. Humanitarian agencies continue to monitor conditions inside Burundi to assess whether circumstances are conducive for further voluntary repatriation.
UNHCR has reiterated that returns must be based on informed choice, with guarantees of safety and access to basic services for those opting to go back home.
