Police in Namibia are investigating the cause of a luxury passenger train crash that killed two crew members near Keetmanshoop.

The accident involved a train operated by Rovos Rail, which was travelling south from Windhoek when it struck a bridge span that had been washed away by flooding at Naute. The location is approximately 285 kilometres from Ariamsvlei, near the South African border.

Officials said emergency services were deployed after the crash, and several injured passengers and crew members received medical treatment.

The Chief Executive Officer of TransNamib, Desmond van Jaarsveld, said the cause of the incident remains under investigation. He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and confirmed that authorities are working to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.

Transport safety authorities have since urged caution in areas affected by recent flooding, warning that damaged rail and road infrastructure poses serious risks to public safety.
