The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities has called for calm following research findings that detected endocrine-disrupting chemicals in some sanitary pads and pantyliners sold in South Africa (SA).
The findings were published by researchers from the University of the Free State, who reported the presence of substances linked to potential hormonal interference in several menstrual health products tested.
Department Spokesperson Cassius Selala said the public will be updated as more verified information becomes available. He added that the department is engaging with the University of the Free State to review existing regulatory frameworks governing menstrual health products in the country.
Selala said the aim of the research was not to cause fear or public panic, but rather to provide scientific information that could help empower consumers, policymakers and healthcare professionals to make informed decisions.
Health authorities have urged consumers to remain calm while investigations continue into product safety standards and potential regulatory responses.
