The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has announced a 19.65% increase in the price of cooking gas, raising the cost from K3 740 to K4 475 per kilogram.
In a statement, the regulator said the adjustment takes immediate effect, citing prevailing market considerations.
However, MERA confirmed that pump prices for petrol and diesel will remain unchanged.
The development is expected to place additional pressure on households already grappling with the rising cost of living, as cooking gas remains a key source of energy for many urban families in Malawi.
Energy analysts say while the decision may reflect global pricing dynamics and exchange rate movements, the unchanged fuel prices could offer some relief to motorists and the transport sector.
