The leaders of South Africa’s (SA) Border Management and Immigration Anti-Corruption Forum under the chairmanship of the Special Investigating Unit, publicly signed a pledge against corruption at the border town of Ladybrand, Free State Province, near the Maseru Bridge.
In a rare turn of events, this high level forum got to hear from convicted offenders who shared their regrettable experiences.
Maseru Bridge was a hive of activity, as the high level anti-corruption delegation toured the land port of entry, the aim, to familiarise with the port and sign a public pledge against acts of corruption…almost 50 port officers have either been fired or awaiting disciplinary verdicts.
The porous border has become a cause for concern to the bordering towns.
This meeting has outlined details of how corrupt officers get entangled in criminal acts, with most unable to explain their lavish lifestyles nor disclose their income sources.
