Botswana’s Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng, says the country’s National Stadium will be ready to host the World Athletics Relays

Botswana’s Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng, says the country’s National Stadium will be ready to host the World Athletics Relays set for May 2–3.

Kelebeng confirmed that work on the athletics track, which will serve as the main competition venue, has been completed. The project included installing a new running surface, and the facility is now waiting for final approval from World Athletics.

He said other upgrade work at the stadium is also progressing steadily. This includes painting the spectator stands, extending VIP ablution facilities, repainting parts of the stadium exterior, and carrying out electrical improvements. The remaining work is expected to be finished by April 11.

Preparations are also underway at the University of Botswana stadium, where the running track is being renovated to serve as the warm-up venue for the event. That work is expected to be completed before the end of the month.

However, Kelebeng noted that the National Stadium still does not meet the standards set by the Confederation of African Football to host Category 3 football matches, meaning it cannot currently stage some top-level continental fixtures.
