A legal challenge has been filed in the High Court of Zimbabwe concerning proposed constitutional changes and growing political tensions around them.
Professor Talent Rusere says he has launched an urgent court application seeking a prohibitory interdict and declaratory relief against several opposition political figures and the government, including Tendai Biti, Jameson Timba, Lovemore Madhuku, Douglas Mwonzora, Job Sikhala, among others.
The application relates to interpretations of constitutional provisions around election cycles and presidential term limits, and whether a referendum would be required for proposed amendments.
Rusere argues that Parliament has the authority to amend certain constitutional provisions with a two-thirds majority.
Meanwhile some political leaders have called for a referendum and public mobilisation against the proposals.
