Chinese vehicle brands made up 17% of all car sales in South Africa (SA) during the last quarter of 2025, signalling their growing foothold in the country’s automotive sector.

This is according to the latest Mobility Insights Report released by TransUnion, which shows that the SA car market finished 2025 at its strongest level in more than ten years.

The report attributes the improvement to lower interest rates, better vehicle pricing, and changing consumer behaviour when it comes to assessing what they can afford.

It also notes that many buyers are now looking beyond the sticker price, paying closer attention to financing costs, repayments, and the long-term affordability of vehicles.

While overall sales suggest the market is recovering, the rise of Chinese brands points to a shift in buyer preferences, as motorists increasingly turn to competitively priced vehicles.
