The South African (SA) Post Office (SAPO) is once again facing the threat of liquidation after its Business Rescue Practitioners formally notified Communications Minister Solly Malatsi of their intention to file for the state‑owned entity’s winding‑up.

The notification was confirmed in a letter sent to the Minister on Friday.

However, Malatsi has rejected the move as premature, insisting that government discussions on the future of the Post Office are still underway, with National Treasury central to the talks.

“My office has received correspondence from the Post Office’s Business Rescue Practitioner expressing their interest in filing for the liquidation of SAPO,” Malatsi said. “It is my view at this stage that talk of liquidation is premature, given the extensive ongoing conversations within government, particularly between the department and National Treasury.”

He said current engagements are aimed at finding a solution that balances the urgency of the entity’s financial crisis with the welfare of employees and the constraints on the national purse. “These engagements are focused on finding a way forward that balances the urgency of the Post Office situation, the welfare of the staff and the limited resources in the best interest of our country,” he added.

The Post Office entered business rescue in July 2023 after a February 2023 provisional liquidation order highlighted severe insolvency, mounting debt and operational inefficiencies. A business rescue plan adopted in December 2023 proposed restructuring SAPO into a modern, sustainable postal and logistics entity.
