Negotiations are now centred on contract duration and assembling his technical team, with several staff members from MC Alger expected to follow him to Libya.
Mokwena resigned on Saturday morning despite MC Alger maintaining their position at the top of the Algerian Ligue 1 table, having secured a 2‑0 victory over PAC on Friday night. His departure ends an eight‑month spell in which he revitalised Mouloudia, establishing them as one of the strongest domestic sides in Algeria.
Although MC Alger flourished under his leadership on the domestic front, their continental campaign fell short after a difficult CAF Champions League group that included Mamelodi Sundowns, Al Hilal and Saint‑Éloi Lupopo.
It is understood that Al‑Ittihad approached Mokwena with what has been described as an ambitious long‑term project aimed at transforming the club into a dominant force in African football. The Tripoli‑based side has undertaken an aggressive recruitment strategy in recent months, bringing in several high‑profile players and signalling clear intent to compete with giants such as Al Ahly, Pyramids FC and Sundowns in future continental competitions.
Sources indicate that Al‑Ittihad’s offer includes not only a highly lucrative financial package but also significant influence over the club’s sporting structure, a gesture intended to attract the 39‑year‑old tactician who has become one of the continent’s most sought‑after coaches.
At a relatively young age, Mokwena has built an impressive résumé, with successful stints at Mamelodi Sundowns, Wydad Athletic Club and most recently MC Alger. His move to Libya marks another bold step in his fast‑rising coaching career.
Mokwena is also set to reunite with winger Thembinkosi Lorch, who joined Al‑Ittihad as part of the club’s recent recruitment drive.
