Angola’s largest opposition party, UNITA, is celebrating 60 years since its founding, a journey that spans the anti-colonial struggle, civil war, and the ongoing process of democratic consolidation.

Party leader Adalberto Costa Júnior says the organisation “is alive,” pointing to the experience and maturity of its grassroots as a source of strength. He also highlighted continuing hurdles, including alleged political intolerance, the criminalisation of opposition voices, and enduring social challenges.

Political analyst José Gama told Caleidoscopio, “UNITA’s 60-year history shows both resilience and the need for continued reform. The party’s role remains central in shaping Angola’s democratic future, but it must navigate a landscape still marked by political and social tensions.”

This anniversary offers a moment to reflect on the party’s impact and the road ahead as Angola works toward stronger democratic institutions.
