Dr David Matsanga, political scientist and conflict resolution expert, discussed key political developments across the region

On Rise and Shine’s West Africa Wrap this Wednesday, Dr David Matsanga, political scientist and conflict resolution expert, discussed key political developments across the region.

In Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently made a high-profile visit to the United Kingdom (UK) to meet the King, a move aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties. Matsanga emphasised that the visit was requested by Nigeria, not the UK, and highlighted ongoing concerns over human rights issues, including insecurity, abductions, and terrorism within the country.

Turning to regional co-operation, Matsanga praised the United States’ (US) renewed engagement in Africa, noting Senegal’s inclusion as the 26th participant in a $12.6 billion US health partnership. He argued that African nations could benefit by maintaining a non-aligned approach, accepting aid and support from multiple international partners such as the US, Russia, and China while focusing on infrastructure and development projects.

Ghana was also discussed, following its announcement of an emergency evacuation plan for nationals in Qatar amid rising regional tensions. Matsanga lauded Ghana’s proactive steps to ensure the safety of its citizens, particularly those working across the Middle East.

He concluded with a call for African nations to adopt more independent and strategic policies in international relations, stressing the importance of safeguarding the continent’s interests while protecting citizens abroad.
