South African (SA) advocacy group Action Society has criticised the government for keeping the National Register for Sex Offenders out of public view, claiming the move effectively shields convicted offenders.
The organisation says this lack of transparency is particularly concerning as cases involving abused children continue to take years to move through the courts. “Delays in justice combined with restricted access to the register undermine accountability and put communities at risk,” said Action Society Spokesperson Juanita du Preez.
The group is calling for the register to be made accessible to the public so that parents, schools, and communities can better protect children while ensuring convicted offenders face full accountability.
