The United Nations (UN) has paid tribute to Nicholas Haysom, who has died while serving as the Secretary-General’s Special Representative in South Sudan.
Haysom was a senior diplomat who worked for many years to promote peace in different parts of the world, including Africa, Asia and the Middle East. He also played an important role in South Africa’s history, serving as an adviser to Nelson Mandela after the end of apartheid.
The UN says he will be remembered for his commitment to peace and his efforts to support countries affected by conflict.
